Repairing a Noisy Water Heater

There can be times when ones hot water heater will start making really loud and strange sounds. It could even be reminiscent of a horror movie or that a popping sound makes it seem like it is about to blow up. Though the sounds can become loud and unsettling to hear, more than likely it is not something that is difficult to repair. We will look at the key reasons why ones water heater might begin producing noise and what homeowners can do to correct the issue.

Common Causes of Water Heater Noises

The most frequent cause of a noisy water heater is that there may be sediment build-up. This accumulation is a naturally occurring event that will occur within the storage tank of the water heater. It is predominantly made of calcium and magnesium and is commonly a problem in residences that have hard water.

When the sediment develops, it is going to trap a small part of hot water under it. This triggers the hot water to boil as the tank does it job of heating water. The boiling water bubbles pop, which are the noises that are heard.

Moreover, the sediment might be the source of the noises. The sediment, which is situated at the lower part of the tank, will get burnt up resulting in odd sounds. And on occasion, the sediment will get moved up towards the top of the tank and breaks off resulting in noises as it plunges back down, hitting the sides of the tank as it does so.

Avoiding Water Heater Sounds

If it is sediment accumulation that is the cause of the noises, a water heater inspection should be performed by a professional. A plumber can take care of any type of draining or flushing of the water storage tank to remove the sediment buildup.

Having ones water heater storage tank drained partially at least once a year will help get rid of the sediment on a regular basis. This is help to not needing a full flush too often.

Another excellent solution is for homeowners to install a water softener. A water softener will remove minerals in the water before it enters the water heater, considerably decreasing sediment build up too.
